February 2011

 

FLOOD RELIEF PROJECT

 

A Flood Relief Project was conducted in the Trincomalee District which was hit hard by heavy rains and floods which displaced close to 2050 persons. This was held with the participation of members of Janasarana Foundation, EAP Network and PINA International Organization. Dry rations and other essential items which included clothes, mats, drinking water, milk powder, Biscuits, Drinking Water Medicine and exercise books etc were distributed to families confined to refugee camps.  A large stock of medicine was donated to the Muttur hospital while the rest of the items were distributed amongst 580 displaced families.

GIFTING OF MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS

The Chuo Maithri Preschool at Borella was selected to be gifted with Musical Instruments the Western Provincial Council, in order to improve the extra curricula activities of its students.

 

The 15th HEART SURGERY

 

The fifteenth heart surgery with the assistance of Punarjeewa Fund was performed at the Cardiology Unit of the Colombo National Hospital.  The recipient was 22 year old Miss S.K. Harshika Lakmali of No. 18/4, Ranasinghagama, Nikapotha, Haputale -  a final year undergraduate of the Faculty of Management, University of Sabaragamuwa.

DISTRIBUTION OF FABRIC MATERIAL

 

A joint project of the Janasarana Praja Sathkara and Devagathi Gamini Ananda of Sri Maha Bhadrakali Amman Kovil of Gaaltenne, Kandy Distributed white school uniform and Sil (Mediation) fabric gift packs worth Rs. 600/ each at the Sri Purvarama Temple in the village of Rambukwella Kandy amongst 175 deserving lay-disciples and students of Damma (Temple) school.

 

DONATION OF DRY RATIONS

 

In order to uplift the lives of the workers of  the Hantana Tamil Estate,  Janasarana Foundation together with Devagathi Gamini Ananda of Sri Maha Bhadrakali Amman Kovil of Gaaltenne, Kandy donated  parcels of dry rations to 100 under privileged Tamil families

DISTRIBUTION OF FABRIC MATERIAL

 

In response to a request made by Ven. Mawathure Punnagi Thero of Sri Mahinda Temple in Gampola, 200 packs of white fabric were distributed among lay-disciples and the students of Damma classes of the temple. This was a joint project arranged by Janasarana Praja Sathkara and Devagathi Gamini Ananda of Sri Maha Bhadrakali Amman Kovil of Gaaltenne, Kandy.

ALMS GIVING

 

A Pinkama (Alms Giving) was held for 65 male and female elders residing at the Sunhinda Lions Care Centre for Elders at Kotte.  The inmates were served with delicious food and new clothes were presented to them. The occasion also included conducting of a Buddha Pooja and a musical evening of song and dance by young Artist Sarala Kariyawasam, while Mr. Victor and Mrs. Maya Damayanthi provided the music

 

SINHALA AND HINDU NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS

 

In order to inspire and encourage the handicapped children in the Rehabilitation Ward of the Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital, a Sinhala and Hindu New Year celebration was organized as a   joint project arranged by the Janasarana Foundation and the Edirisinghe Trust Investments.  The activities of the evening included performance of dances sing song, drawings, selecting the New Year Prince and Princess Etc. All participants were given attractive gifts.

CATARACT OPERATIONS

 

The recently inaugurated Suwanetha Lions Eye Hospital at Gothatwa New Town, performed its first series of cataract operations which numbered 55 on 7th May 2011 conducted Consultant Eye Surgeon, Dr. Chamintha Amaratunga

 

 

ALMS GIVING

Dane (Alms) was offered to 2000 school children who observed Sil (Meditation) which was held at Danthure Madhya Maha Vidyalaya to commemorate the 2600 Sambuddha Jayanthi This programme was arranged by Devagathi Gamini Ananda of Sri Bhadrakali Amman Kovil Gaaltenne, Kandy. 

 

 

DONATION OF HOUSE

 

 

A newly built house was donated to Mr. Kamal Wickremasinghe at Nawagaththegama.  Mr. Kamal and his family who live in the remote village of Palugaswewa  in Rambakanayagama.  Funds to build the house were donated by two kind benefactors Deshamanya Sarathchandra Ramanayake and Mrs. Shereen Ramanayake while essential house hold items were donated by the Janasarana Foundation.

 

 

VESAK DANSALA

 

A Vesak Dansala organized by Janasarana Foundation for the fifth consecutive year was held at Thilakarathnaramaya, Borella on 18th May 2011. The project was funded by the Janasarana Foundation along with public contributions were hundreds of people were hosted to a nutritious meal.

 

 

EYE CAMP

 

An Eye Camp was organized to screen potential cataract patients with the objective of providing them the opportunity to free medical care at the Suwanetha Lions Eye Hospital at Gothatuwa New Town.  Out of the160 patients who were examined 45 deserving persons were selected for the proposed cataract operations.

16th HEART SURGERY

The sixteenth heart surgery was performed with the assistance of Punarjeewa Fund at the Cardiology Unit of the Colombo National Hospital on 8th June 2011.  The recipient was 48 years old Mrs. S.K. H.P. Nandanie of Angoda.  The surgery was successfully performed by the Consultant Cardiac Surgeon Dr. Nimali Fernando with the assistance of the efficient staff in the Cardiology Unit.

 

 

MONTHLY JANASARANA PUBLIC PROGRAMME

 

The Monthly Programme of Janasarana Praja Sathkaraya was held on 12th June 2011 at the William Hall of All Ceylon Buddhist Congress Hall, Bauddhaloka Mawatha Colombo 07.  The Chief Guest was Mr. D.M.D. Dissanayake, the Principal of D.S. Senanayake Vidyalaya of Colombo.  Ven. Peradeniye Sujatha Thero and Mr. Michael Scronzak of Blue Lotus Temple in USA were the Guests of Honour at this occasion.  The significant item on the agenda was the donation of US $ 700 by Ven. Sujatha Thero for the purchase of an Incubator for the Children’s Ward at Peradeniya National Hospital. Thereafter, 17 wheel chairs, 7 computers, 15 sew machines, 10 bicycles and 3 sets of school stationary too were distributed amongst the chosen needy. Additionally 33 students who had completed the Computer Course conducted by Sri Punyaloka Viharastha Janasarana Computer Training Centre at Wtareka, Meegoda were awarded Certificates.

 

17th HEART SURGERY

 

The seventeenth heart surgery was performed with the assistance of Punarjeewa Fund at the Colombo National Hospital on 8th June 2011.  The recipient was 27 years old Miss. H.H. Ajantha of Sri Gunarathana Mawatha, Kandurupe, Bussa.  The surgery was successfully performed by the Consultant Cardiac Surgeon Dr. Nimali Fernando

 

 

BLOOD DONATION CAMPAIGN

 

Under the theme of “Save a Life – Donate Blood”, Edirisinghe Trust Investments together with Janasarana Padanama organized a Blood Donation Campaign.  It was held on 25th June 2011 at Thilakarathnaramaya, Borella.  The National Blood Bank took the initiative to provide necessary facilities where over 600 voluntary donors participated. 

 

 

FREE CATARACT OPERATIONS

 

Free Cataract operations were performed on 18 underprivileged persons at the recently opened Suwanetha Lions Eye Hospital at Gothatuwa New Townon. The surgeries were successfully performed by Consultant Eye Surgeon Dr.  Chamintha Amarathunga.

DONATION OF INCUBATOR

An Incubator valued at of Rs. 700,000 was donated for the use of premature babies in the Maternity Ward of the Peradeniya Base Hospital. The incubator was funded by Ven. Peradeniya Sujatha Thero of USA and donated to commemorate the birth anniversasry of Ven. Waththegama Dhammawasa Thero of Sri Subudhoramaya, Peradeniya.  Additionally a Buddha Statue worth Rs. 40,000 was presented to the Children’s Ward along with valuable religious books to the library of the Maternity Ward. 

 

 DONATION OF HOUSE

 

A house worth Rs. 600,000 was built and gifted to for Mr. Sugathadasa Dissanayake a disabled person of No. 74, Weeryapura, Badulla. He was also gifted with items of clothing, food and money.  Ven. Peradeniya Sujatha Thero, Devagathi Gamini Ananda of Sri Bhadrakali Amman Kovil in Kandy and the members of Janasarana Foundation together with Dr. Soma Edirisinghe participated at this event.

18th HEART SURGERY

The eighteen heart operation was performed at the National Hospital on 29th August, 2011 by Dr. Vajira Senarathne, Consultant Cardiac Surgeon. The patient is Mr. H.M. Piyasena aged 40 years from Batalanda road, Walgama, Ragama Ragama and the cost of surgary was funded by Punarjeewa - Dr. Soma Edirisinghe

7th ANNIVERSARY OF JANASARANA FOUNDATION

Award Ceremony of Janasarana Foundation in commemoration of it 7th Anniversary was held on 24th September,  at the members of Janasarana Foundation followed by dinner. The members who worked with much dedication during the last year were given appreciation awards, certificates and medals by the Chief Guest - Mr. Ravindra Randeniya.  Mr. Manawathilaka Warshahennadige of Honda Hitha Enterprises Donated Rs. 100,000.00/- to Dr. Soma Edirisinghe, Founder / Chairperson for the future development of Janasarana.

22 HEART SURGERY

The twenty second heart surgery was performed with the assistance of Punarjeewa Fund at the Cardiology Unit of the Colombo National Hospital on 3rd October, 2011.  The recipient was 38 years old Mr. W. Sisira Navaratne of Horana.  Three members of Janasarana Praja Sathakaraya attended at this event.    The surgery was performed by the Consultant Cardiac Surgeons of Dr. S. Narenthiran and Dr. Vajira Senaratne with the assistance of the efficient staff in the Cardiology Unit. The surgery was totally successful.

23 HEART SURGERY

With the assistance of Punarjeewa Fund the twenty third heart surgery was performed at the Cardiology Unit of the Colombo National Hospital on 4th October, 2011.  Punarjeewa assistance was granted to Mr. M.S.S.A. Cader of Kalpitiya Road, Puttalam who was 56 year old.  Mr. Nihal Sanjaya and Mr. Ameen Azeez from Janasarana Praja Sathkaraya attended at the surgery.  The Consultant surgeon Dr. Gotabhaya Ranasinghe performed with the assistance Senior Registrar – Dr. M. Jamaldeen and the staff of the Cardiology Unit.  Since the surgery was successful Mr. Cader and his family thanked  Punarjeewa Fund for its great service.

24 HEART SURGERY

The Consultant Surgeon Dr. W.S. Shantharaj and Dr. M. Jamaldeen performed the twenty fourth heart surgery to  56 years old Mr. Wickremage Sunil of Panamura Road, Embilipitiya at the Theatre No. 1 of the Colombo National Hospital on 10th October 2011.  Three members from the Janasarana Praja Sathkaraya participated at this event. The surgery was successful and the patient and his son - Mr. W.S. Kumara commented and thanked the Punarjeewa Fund for their assistance.

Preaching Hall Opening

The opening of the newly constructed Preaching Hall at Sri Mahinda Temple at Mawathura, Gampola was declared opened by Dr. Soma Edirisinghe, Chairperson of Janasarana Foundation together with Devathathi Gamini Ananda with the participation of six members of Janasaana on 11th October 2011.  The welcome speech was delivered by Ven Mawathure Punnaji Thero. 

110 Cataract Operations were performed

In commemoration of World Sight Day the Janasarana Foundation together with the Lions Club of Thimbirigasyaya 306 C2 did 110 cataract operations on 13th October, 2011 at Suwanetha Lions Eye Hospital at Gothatuwa New town.  The surgeries were performed by Consultant Surgeon Dr. Chamintha Amaratunga.  District Governor Lion Lal Manuelge and Lion Lady Aruni and a few lion members and Janasarana members participated at this event.

26 HEART SURGERY

The twenty sixth heart operation for 38 years old Mrs. M.G. Dilhani Surangika of Galagedera, Padukka was done at Asiri Surgical Hospital, Colombo 05 on 29th October 2011.  It was performed by the  Consultant Cardiac Surgeon – Dr. Rohan Gunawardena assisted by Senior Registrar Dr. Susitha Amarasinghe with the team efficient staff at the hospital.  The patient and her husband Mr. Upul Thilakawardena thanked the Punarjeewa Fund and the staff of the Asiri Surgical Hospital for their assistance.

DONATION OF  TWO HOUSES

A two story house worth of Rs. 375,000/-  was built at D Side, Upcot, Maskeliya and donated to  a poor family - Mr. Samel Rajendram and Mrs. Laiza  on 20th November, 2011.  The house was opened by the Chairperson of Janasarana Foundation – Dr. Soma Edirisinghe and a few members of Janasarana.   A colour TV and a set of cutlery were also gifted to them by the Chairperson.  The owners of the house thanked Janasarana Foundation  and Punarjeewa Friendship Heart Bands were sold to the Grama Niladari of the area and to Swarnavahini Correspondent of Hatton – Norwood.

EYE SCREENING CAMP  

Cataract screening programme was held at St. Mary’s Church, Mattakkuliya on 3rd December, 2011 organized by the Suwanetha Lions Eye Hospital at Gothatywa New Town and  Janasarana Foundation together with the Parish Priest – Rev. Fr. Calixtus Fernando.  Mrs. Deepa Edirisinghe participated at this event with some members of Janasarana Foundation.  Mr. Palitha Jayasinghe, Optometrist examined 124 people and found 45 people with cataract in either both eyes or in one eye.  As they were from very poor families,  recommended for free cataract operations to be done at Suwanetha Lions Eye Hospital.

 

 

VARIETY ENTERTAINMENT PROGRAMME

A programme of variety entertainment has been organized by the Lions Club of Colombo Park Circle together with Janasarana Foundation for the disabled war heroes at the Ranaviru Sevana, Ragama.  It was held on 3rd December, 2011 from 3.30 to 7.30 p.m.  Dr. Soma Edirisinghe and Lions District Governor – Lion Lal Manuelge and Lion Lady Varuni participated as Guests of Honour.  They visited all wards, talked with every disabled person and offered them with gifts and refreshments. Soon after a musical show started at the main hall and a few items were performed by   Mr. Bandu Samarasinghe, Mr. Buddhika Rambukwella and Seargent Nallathambi.  Everyone was happy and enjoyed the evening with the arrival of Santa Clause.

 

 

X'MAS PROGRAMME

On 5th December 2011 Janasarana members participated at a X’mas programme organized by the Regent International College of Gampaha to receive Rs. 50,000/= collected by the students by selling Punarjeewa Friendship Heart Bands which were handed over to them at an earlier instance.  Mr. Nissanka Marapona, Principal of the School handed over the cash to Mr. Ameen at this occasion.

27th HEART SURGERY

27th Heart Surgery funded by Punarjeewa Fund was carried out at the National Hospital, Colombo on 20th December, 2011.  The patient was 58 years old G.M. Seelawathie of Obeysekerapura, Rajagiriya.  The Consultant Cardiologist Dr. J.B. Jayawardena performed the operation with the team of efficient team in Theatre No. 2 and it was completed successfully within one hour.  Dr. Prasad Deshapriya, Mr. Ranjith Nishantha and Mrs. Ameen Azeez from Punarjeewa Fund participated at the event.  Speaking to the media, the beneficiary’s daughter thanked the Punarjeewa Fund for the assistance they received to save her mother’s life.

 

PRE SCHOOL PRICE GIVING

The annual prize giving and the concert  of Chuo Maithree Pre School being maintained by Janasarana Foundation and Lions Club of Thimbirigasyaya 306 C2 was held on 21st December, 2011 at the main hall at Thilakaratnaramaya Temple, Borella.  Dr. Soma Edirisinghe, Founder & Chairperson of Janasarana Foundation was the Chief Guest and the Guest  were Ven. Pannala Gnanaloka Thero, Ven. Yakelle Sunanda Thero, Lion Ivor Perera, Lion Prabha Dharmaratne and at this occasion. The students left for primary education were in cloaks and awarded with certificates and gifts for the best performances.

JANUARY 2012

28 HEART SURGERY

28th Heart Surgery funded by Punarjeewa Fund was carried out at the Nawaloka Hospital, Colombo 02 on 13th January 2012.  The beneficiary was 44 years old Mr. T.L. Gunathilaka of No. 22, Littletus Watta, Waskaduwa.  The Consultant Cardiologist Dr. Sandeep Sriwasthawa performed the Coronary Artery Bi-pass Graft with the efficient  team at Nawaloka Theatre and successfully completed in five hours.    Dr. Prasad Deshapriya, Mr. Ranjith Nishantha and Mrs. Ameen Azeez from Punarjeewa Fund participated at the event.  Speaking to the media, the beneficiary’s  wife and daughter thanked the Punarjeewa Fund for the assistance they received for the surgery.

 

MARCH 2012

29 HEART SURGERY

The 29th Heart Surgery funded by the Punarjeewa Fund has been done at the Asiri Surgical Hospital, Kirimandala Mawatha, Colombo 05 on 13th March 2012. The beneficiary was 63 year old Mr. S.K. Weragoda of No25/7, Rajakaruna Gardens, Mission Road, Pita Kotte. The Consultant Cardiologist Dr. Jagath
Herath performed the operation. Mrs. Chitra Perera and Mr. Ameen Azeez from Punarjeewa Fund participate the event. Before Mr. Weragoda was taken to the theatre, he thanked the Punarjeeewa Fund for helping him to get the long waited surgery done.

JANASARANA COMPUTER LAB AT MEEGODA

A Review Programme of the Computer Course conducted by the Janasarana Foundation at Sri Punayaloka Temple at Meegoda, Watareka was held on 22nd March 2012. This Computer Course is mainly designed free of charge for the children of poor families who will be fortunate to open a path to enter into global affairs. Dr. Soma Edirisinghe, the Founder and Chairperson of Janasarana Foundation, Ven. Pannala Ghnanaloka Thero and a few Executive Committee members visited the institution. They observed how children are being taught
and how they use computers. Mr. Indika Ranasinghe, the Tutor informed that Ven Mavalgama Gnanissara Thero always keep a close eye on this classes and the children who have completed the First Part of the course have a good knowledge in computer studies. This is the Phase III of the Information Technology course conducted by this institution.

30 HEART SURGERY

The 30th Heart Surgery assisted by the Punarjeewa Fund has been done at the National Hospital of Colombo on 22nd March 2012. The beneficiary was 48 years old Mrs. J.V. Kumudinie Siriwardena of No.114/4A, Maharagama Road, Piliyandala - Maviththara. The Consultant Cardiologist Dr. Asanka Dunuwila
performed the operation. A few members of Janasarana Prajasathkaraya including Mrs. Deepa Edirisinghe visited the patient at her residence on 30th March after she was discharged from the hospital. She thanked Punarjeewa Fund for providing assistance to get a completely successful life saving surgery.

21 CATARACT OPERATIONS

21 Cataract operations have been performed on 30th March, 2012 at Suwanetha Lions Eye Hospital on 30th March, 2012. After registering the patients at 1.00 p.m. prepared them for the surgery. All surgeries were
successfully completed with the dedicated service provided by Dr. Amila De Alwis, Consultant Eye Surgeon and the staff of the hospital including Mr. N.W. Dhanapala, General Manager.

APRIL 2012

ANNUAL OUTING

Janasarana Prajasathkaraya organized the annual outing for the resident inmates of Sunhinda Elders Home funded by Mrs. Deepa Edirisinghe, Treasurer of Janasarana. The inmates visited Purvarama Raja Maha
Temple at Veherahena, Matara and thereafter Buduraja Maha Temple at Vavurukannala. The journey started at 7.00 a.m. on 1st April, 2012 from Kotte in a super luxury bus went along new Galle Expressway. A few members of the Janasarana Executive Committee and Ven. Pannala Gnanaloka Thero participated at this event. After worshipping the Veherahena Temple, lunch was provided in a Restaurant at Matara. They were able to see the museum, more than 100 years old giant clock at Vevurukannala. After enjoying the trip
they returned to Colombo at 6.30 p.m.

 

HEALTH CAMP

Together with the Lion Ladies of Lions International District 306 C2, the Janasarana Prajasathkaraya held a multi-purpose service activity including an eye screening camp for cataract, distribution of shoes for 132 students, exercise books, instruments etc. at Udugala Vidyalaya, Ayagama on 6th April, 2012. District Governor Lion Lal Manuelge & Lion Lady Aruni, the members of Lions Club and Janasarana Executive Committee members participated at this event. Lunch was provided to all the students attended and a dental clinic was held in the afternoon for school children. Besides this District Governor donated two adjustable cardiac beds to Ayagama hospital.

33 HEART SURGERY

The 33rd Heart Surgery funded by the Punarjeewa Fund has been done at the Asiri Surgical Hospital, Kirimandala Mawatha, Colombo 05 on 16th April 2012. The beneficiary was 58 years old Mr. B. Weerasena of Kahatapitiya Road, Balangoda who was a deaf and dumb person. The Consultant Cardiologist
Dr. Vivek Gupta performed the operation. Before Mr. Weerasena was taken to the theatre, Dr. Gupta visited his room to encourage him as he was so nervous due to his deformity. Ven. Warapitiya Devananda Thero who was a relative of the patient and his sister Mrs. Daya Vitharana thanked the Punarjeeewa Fund for granting assistance to get the long waited surgery done. Dr. Prasad Deshapriya and Mr. Malinga Gunaratne, the Executive members of Janasarana participated at this event.

EYE SCREENING CAMP

An eye screening for Cataract campaign was held on 29th April, 2012 at Thalgahawatta Vijaya Sriwardhanarama Temple, Karandeniya.  This has been arranged for the under privileged people covering the area of Ambalangoda, Balapitiya, Bentara- Elpitiya and Baddegama.  311 people were screened and 87 people were identified with cataract.  They were referred to Suwanetha Lions Eye Hospital for surgeries.  Thereafter some spectacles and dhamma books provided by Dr. Soma Edirisinghe were handed over to Ven. Vimalajothi Thero and Mr. Sudath Premalal.

JUNE 2012

37th HEART SURGARY

The 37th Heart Surgery assisted by the Punarjeewa Fund has been done at the Asiri Surgical Hospital on 15th June 2012.  The beneficiary was 31 years old Mr. L.G. Saman Sanjeewa of No. 139/2, Weragolla, Puwakpitiya.  The Consultant Cardiologist Dr. Y.K.M. Lahee assisted by Dr. Ajith Abeyratne and the team including Dr.  Lushantha Padmasiri, Anesthetist performed the operation.  The Founder Chairperson – Dr. Soma Edirisinghe,  Ven. Pannala Gnanaloka Thero and Mrs. Kusum Abeytissa participated at the event.  As ETI Finance Ltd. also contributed to this heart operation Mr. Sarath Thilakaratne also participated.  The patient’s brother  thanked Punarjeewa Fund for providing assistance to the surgery.

10th ANNIVERSARY OF SUNHINDA

In celebrating the10th Anniversary of Sunhinda Elders Home, annual handicraft exhibition was held on Saturday, 23rd June 2012 at its premises.   The exhibition was opened by Ven. Maduluwawe Sobitha Thero as Chief Guest after the preaching delivered by Ven. Pannala Gnanaloka Thero.  Dr. Soma Edirisinghe, Chairperson of the Elders Home organized this occasion enabling guests to see and buy Patch work & wooden items, cross stitch designs, paintings, garments and many more things done by the inmates of the home.  Money collected from sales were given to the respective inmates who provided the items.

 

38 HEART SURGERY

The 38th Heart Surgery assisted by the Punarjeewa Fund has been done at the Asiri Surgical Hospital on 28th June 2012. The beneficiary was 41 years old Mrs. A. Nayana Kopiwatta of No. 153/7, Nanayakkara Mawatha, Obeysekerapura, Rajagiriya. The Consultant Cardiologist Dr. K. Rajakanthan assisted by the
team including Dr. Tissa Wickremasuriya. Director of the Asiri Surgical Hospital performed the operation. Ven. Pannala Gnanaloka Thero chanted pirith before taking the patient into the theatre. Brother of the patient thanked Punarjeewa Fund for providing assistance to the surgery.

 

JULY 2012

DONATION OF DIRIYA FOUNDATION

Equipment such as wheel chairs, crutches etc. which will be useful for disabled people and hospital equipment including a operation theatre bed and cupboards were donated to Janasarana Foundation by Mr. K.A. Dayaratne, Chairman of Diriya Padanama Galle Branch with the intention of helping more deserving
people. These items were sent from Germany and were handed over to Dr. Soma Edirisinghe on 4th July, 2012 at the premises of Impala Theatre, Rajagiriya with the participation of a few members of Executive Committee.

 

ENCUBATOR DONATION

An Incubator cum Photo Therapy Unit worth of Rs. 500,000/- was donated to the Maternity Ward at Peradeniya Teaching Hospital on 9th July, 2012 for the use of innocent children who needs treatment. The machine was handed over to Dr. (Mrs) Chandra Gunathilake , the Director of the Hospital by Dr. Soma Edirisinghe together with Ven. Peradeniye Sujatha Thero of Blue Lotus Temple of USA.

 

COWS AND GOATS RELEASED

Six cows and four goats were released on 29th July, 2012 by the Chairperson and Committee members of Janasarana Foundation at the Kudauduwa Vharaya, Horana. It has been organized by the family members in memory of Mr. Mahesh Padmalal who died under tragic circumstances four months ago. Ven. Ingiriye Uditha Thero arranged the farmers to look after the animals.

DONATION FOR HOMAGAMA BASE HOSPITAL

A hospital bed for the Intensive Care Unit and eleven bed side cupboards received from Diriya Padanama with a value of Rs. 250,000- were donated to Homagama Base Hospital on 4th August 2012 by Dr. Soma Edirisinghe, Chairperson of Janasarana Foundation. Dr. W.A.P. Pradeep Ratnasekera, Medical Superintendent of the Hospital and his team accepted the items with thanks.

PLAY GROUNDS FOR CHILDREN'S

Children’s Play Ground at Seevalipura “B” Zone at Borella reconstructed by Janasarana Foundation was declared opened on 1st October, 2012 by the Chairperson with the participation of Committee Members in commemoration of World Children Day. The Chief Guest at this occasion was Hon. Jayantha De Silva, Member of Provincial Council, Colombo. The play ground was for the children of low income families of the area.

50 HEART SURGERY

Punarjeewa Fund arranged its 50th Heart Surgery in a grand scale at Kurunegala Teaching Hospital on 11th January, 2013. The patient was 56 years old Mr. K.K. Wickremasinghe of Egoda Ambepussa, Thalagama. Full cost of the surgery was borne by Mr. Bharat Samthani of Singapore. The Consultant Cardiologist Dr. Gamini Weerakoon successful completed the surgery within three hours. Dr. Soma Edirisinghe, Chairperson of Punarjeewa Fund participated at the event together with Janasarana Executive Committee members. The Chief Guest at the programme was Hon. Athula Wijesinghe, Chief Minister of North Western Province. Mrs. S.A. Chandrawathi, wife of the patient and his children thanked the Punarjeewa Fund as well as the Doctors for their effort to save the life of Mr. Wickremasinghe.

51 HEART SURGERY

The 51st Heart Surgery assisted by the Punarjeewa Fund has been done at the Nawaloka Hospital on 8th January, 2013. The beneficiary was 39 years old Mr. B.W.B. Kumarathunga of No. 329/A. Hindurangala road, Baduwala Kanda, Kiriella. The Consultant Cardiologist Dr. G. Gandhiji performed the surgery. Mr. Priyalal Nanayakkara, Manager of Nawaloka Cardiac Unit and Mrs. Nishani Gunasekera, Public Relations Officer extended their fullest cooperation to do the surgery successfully and they warmly welcomed Dr.
Soma Edirisinghe, Punarjeewa Fund when she participated at the event.Mrs. Sunanda Priyadarshini, wife of the patient thanked Punarjeewa Fund for providing assistance to the surgery.

53 HEART SURGERY

The 53rd Heart Surgery assisted by the Punarjeewa Fund has been done at the Nawaloka Hospital on 18th January, 2013. The beneficiary was 45 years old Mr. W.M. Chandrasiri of Nuwara Gedera, Kodayana, Dombawela, Moneragala. The Consultant Cardiologist Dr. Tanya Perera performed the surgery. Mr. Priyalal
Nanayakkara, Manager of Nawaloka Cardiac Unit and Mrs. Nishani Gunasekera, Public Relations Officer extended their fullest cooperation to do the surgery successfully. Mrs. Shereen Ramanayake and Mr. Gamini De Silva participated at the event on behalf of Punarjeewa Fund. Before taking to the theatre Mr. Chandrasiri and his family members extended their thanks and cooperation to Punarjeewa Fund for providing assistance to the surgery.

 

A SET OF SPEAKERS DONATION

A set of loud speakers was donated to a less fortunate school at Trincomalee on the request made by Mr. P.A. Jayasundara , Founder of Kantale Poor Village Child Education and Welfare society. This unit worth of Rs. 40,000/- was donated by Mr. Hemantha Wickremapala, Proprietor of Wickrema Photo & Swarnavahini Correspondent at Suwanetha Lions Eye Hospital, Gothatuwa New Town on 29th January, 2013 for the use of students in Wan Ela Madhaya Maha Vidyalaya, Trincomalee. Chairperson of Janasarana Foundation – Dr. Soma Edirisinghe and a few members of the Executive Committee participated at the event.

DONATION OF SCHOOL BOOKS AND UNIFORM 

 

In order to help the students of the low income families in Wellampitiya, Janasarana Foundation together with Devagathi Gamini Ananda of Sri Bhadrakali Amman Kovil of Galtenna, Kandy distributed school books and
uniform materials to 600 children. The programme was held on 0th February, 2013 at Sri Wimalaramaya, Wellampitiya. The Chief Guest was Dr. Soma Edirisinghe, Chairperson of Janasarana Foundation. Committee members of Janasarana Foundation also participated at this occasion.

 

NEWLY BUILT BUDDHA STATUE

Unveiled a Buddha Statue at the newly built Budu Medura at the premises of Suwanetha Lions Eye Hospital on 14th February, 2013 at 10.00 a.m. The project was implemented on the request made by Ven. Amuna Kandure Dhammarathana Thero and members of Dayaka Sabha of Kande Purana Viharaya, Gothatuwa. While chanting of Pirith by Ven. Pannala Gnanaloka Thero, the Budu Medura was opened by Dr. Soma Edirisinghe and the people gathered for the occasion honoured the statue with lotus flowers.

 

 

05TH HEALTH CAMP AT NIKAWARATIYA

The 5th Health Camp organized by Janasarana Foundation was held on 16th February 2013 from 8.30 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. at Mahasen National School at Nikaweratiya. It was a joint project with the Lions Club of Homagama and the Media Centre for National Security. There were clinics for pregnant mothers,
general physical, ayurvedic, wound dressing and also blood sugar tests were conducted.
Also there was an eye screening camp to select patients for free cataract surgeries. It covered a population of four police divisions in the electorate of Nikaweratiya. The Chief Guest at the event was Mr. Lakshman
Hulugalle, Director General of the Media Centre for National Security. Necessary medicine for the health camp was provided by Lion Anura Mendis, Lion Gamini Karunaratne, Lion Kasun Jagoda, Mr. Nihal Dhanapala, Mr. Ravi Masakorala, Kurunegala Richard Trading Company, Mr. Shereen Ramanayake, Mrs. Amara
Herath and Mr. Prabha Dharmaratne. Doctors from Nikaweratiya Base Hospital,
Kalutara Base Hospital voluntarily provided the services for the deserving people.

MULTY-PERPOSE MEDICAL CAMP

A multi-purpose medical camp including Free Eye Screening for Cataract and Diabetic Retinopathy Awareness Programme was held on 2nd March 2013 at Kolonnawa Raja Maha Viharaya, Kolonnawa. On the request made by Mr. Suresh Kodagoda, Deputy Mayor of Kolonnawa Town Council and Chairman – Kodagoda Foundation, the programme was arranged together with Janasarana Foundation and Suwanetha Lions Eye Hospital. The religious rituals was done by Ven. Thalangama Sugatananda Thero of Kolonnawa Raja Maha Viharaya. Dr. Soma Edirisinghe, Chairperson- Janasarana Foundation and Committee members participated at this event. Leaflets on Diabetic Retinopathy were distributed among the people at the awareness programme. Also there were Dental Clinic and a mobile Laboratory. All the people who sought assistance from the medical camp were served with a cup of Kola Kanda provided by Hotel Sapphire sponsored by Dr. Soma Edirisinghe. Those who found with cataract were advised to visit Suwanetha Lions Eye Hospital for further treatment and free surgeries. The project was concluded successfully.

AWARD OF APPRECIATION ON INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

 

Dr. Soma Edirisinghe, Chairperson of Janasarana Foundation was presented with an Award of Appreciation on International Women’s Day - 8th March 2013 at Galle Town Hall. The event has been organized by Bandula Lal Bandarigoda Foundation together with a handicraft exhibition. The Chairman of the Foundation is Mr. Bandula Lal Bandarigoda, MP of Southern Provincial Council. Dr. Soma Edirisinghe being the Chief Guest at this event was greatly appraised for all social service project she had done to the community. There were about 32,000 women trained in handicraft manufacturing under the Bandarigoda Foundation. At the same time Mr. Bandula Lal Bandarigoda donated Rs. 50,000/ - to Dr. Soma Edirisinghe in favour of Suwanetha Lions Eye Hospital. Ms. Anarkali Akarsha, popular actress and Dr. Prasad Deshapriya addressed the
gathering.
